National Immigrant Rights Groups Back Hyatt Boycotts

From December 15-17, 2011, representatives of immigrant rights organizations across the United States went to Montgomery, Alabama to take part in the Immigration National Convention, organized by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement.

Jose Guevara, a longtime employee at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, IL, joined sisters Martha and Lorena Reyes to share their stories of hardship and struggle at Hyatt.  Guevara spoke about how Hyatt had threatened to cut workers healthcare benefits.  The Reyes sisters shared their story of how Hyatt had fired them after Martha objected to the posting of sexually suggestive photos of herself and her sister on a company bulletin board.

Hearing these stories, over 100 participants and organizations pledged to honor the Hyatt boycotts, including:

  • Promise Arizona
  • Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights
  • Florida Immigrant Coalition
  • Center for Community Change
  • New Organizing Institute
  • NY Immigration Coalition
  • Voces de La Frontera, Wisconsin
  • CHIRLA
