My name is Antonia Cortez, and I have worked at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco for 35 years. The first time I realized how important my union benefits are was in 1983, when I was diagnosed with leukemia. Because of my union-negotiated contract, my healthcare plan covered the operation and my treatments. I survived and was able to return to work. I realized then that healthcare and pension are more valuable even than wages. Now, after 35 years of working the same difficult tasks over and over, I have chronic pain in my shoulders and elbows. I worry that I will have pain and health issues for the rest of my life. I want to help workers at non-union Hyatts to have pension and healthcare benefits because I know they experience the same pain I do.
